Almost all of Rapa Nui [1]’s 3,791 residents live in Hanga Roa [2], the island’s only town. More than two-thirds can claim Polynesian ancestry, but many Rapanui also live in mainland Chile and overseas. At the same time, nearly 200 mainland Chileans settle on the island every year, straining its health, education, and social services.
