The utilitarian Hotel Maitén (12 de Octubre 140, tel. 02901/422745, US$30/40 s/d) remains a reasonable budget choice.

Pueblo Viejo (Deloqui 242, tel. 02901/ 432098, www.puebloviejo.info [1], US$34/42 s/d) is a new B&B, on the foundations of an early Ushuaia [2] house, that replicates the traditional Magellanic style with innovative contemporary touches. The street-level rooms are more luminous than their semibasement counterparts; at present, all have shared baths, but 10 others with private bath are under construction.

For more contemporary style, the hillside Martín Fierro B&B (9 de Julio 175, tel. 02901/430525, javiersplace [at] hotmail [dot] com, US$25 pp) has two bunks in each of several small but well-designed rooms with shared baths. Host Javier Jury has created tasteful common areas that are simultaneously spacious and cozy, and the breakfast is varied and filling; the shower stalls are tiny, though. Two downstairs “aparthotel” rooms (US$80) sleep up to four people each.

Rehabbed Hotel César (Av. San Martín 753, tel. 02901/421460, hotelcesarhostal [at] speedy [dot] com [dot] ar, US$33/50 s/d) has become one of the central area’s better values. Management has turned grumpy at Hostería Mustapic (Piedrabuena 230, tel. 02901/421718, mustapic [at] sinectis [dot] com [dot] ar, US$40/50 s/d), but it’s still adequate and fairly central. Breakfast costs US$2 extra.
