Prices have risen significantly at well-regarded, cul-de-sac Hostal Sonia (Pasaje Darwin 175, tel. 061/248543, www.hostalsk.50megs.com [1], US$37/53 s/d), which has rooms with private baths; rates include breakfast.

Suitable in a pinch, the so-so Hostal del Estrecho (José Menéndez 1048, tel./fax 061/241011, www.chileanpatagonia.com/estrecho [2], US$22/40–46/55 s/d) has rooms with either shared or private bath.

Low-key Hostal Terrasur (O’Higgins 723, tel. 061/225618, www.hostalterrasur.cl [3], US$42/58 s/d) is one of the more appealing B&Bs in its range. Rates include cable TV, telephone, and continental breakfast.

Though it’s well-kept, rising prices make Hostal José Menéndez (José Menéndez 882, tel. 061/221279, www.chileaustral.com/josemenendez [4], US$33/41–46/59 s/d with breakfast) a lesser value than it once was, especially since some rooms are small. Still, it’s friendly, central, arranges tours, and has parking; rates vary for shared or private bath.

Despite its narrow facade, Hostal Calafate (Magallanes 926, www.calafate.cl [5], tel./fax 061/241281, US$30/46–50/60 s/d) is a rambling building with spacious rooms; remodeled just a few years ago, it keeps a couple of so-called celdas de castigo (“prison cells”) for backpacker clients for US$15 per person—a pretty good deal in a well-kept, central facility.

Hostal de la Avenida (Av. Colón 534, tel./fax 061/247532 or 061/249486, US$52/65 s/d) remains a respectable choice for the price. Hotel Cóndor de Plata (Av. Colón 556, tel. 061/247987, fax 061/241149, US$55/65 s/d) has always been good, but its prices are less competitive than they once were. Hostal Carpa Manzano (Lautaro Navarro 336, tel. 061/710744, carpamanzano [at] tie [dot] cl, US$60/70 s/d) gets good marks in its category.

Hotel Savoy (José Menéndez 1073, tel./fax 061/247979, www.hotelsavoy.cl [6], US$64/81 s/d) lacks style—some interior walls have cheap plywood paneling—but the rooms are large and comfortable, and the staff is responsive.

Hostal Turismo Oro Fueguino (Fagnano 356, tel./fax 061/249401 or 061/246677, tel. 099/2183690, US$66/82 s/d) is still a good hotel, but new aluminum siding and faux brick have mutilated its deco-style exterior. Rising rates include cable TV, telephone, central heating, breakfast, and private bath; some rooms are windowless but have skylights.

Half a block south of Plaza Muñoz Gamero [7], Hotel Plaza (Nogueira 1116, tel. 061/241300, fax 061/248613, www.chileaustral.com/hplaza [8], US$72/87 s/d) is a classic of its era.

Occupying a stylishly modernized building, Hotel Mercurio (Fagnano 595, tel./fax 061/242300, mercurio [at] chileaustral [dot] com, US$69/88 s/d) offers both convenience and charm, with gracious staff to boot. The midsize rooms at contemporary Hotel Los Navegantes (José Menéndez 647, tel. 061/244677, fax 061/247545, www.hotellosnavegantes.com [9], US$72/97 s/d) have standard conveniences.
