Replacing an earlier market that the city had outgrown, Temuco [1]’s municipal bazaar (1928) is a high-ceilinged landmark that draws tourists with its accomplished crafts and typical restaurants, which vary from the plain and simple to, if not quite sublime, at least very good. Locals, though, take advantage of abundant fresh produce and utilitarian commodities such as manufactured household goods and clothing.
Two blocks north of the Plaza de Armas, the Mercado Municipal (Manuel Rodríguez 960, tel. 045/203345, www.mercadotemuco.cl [2]) fills most of the eastern two-thirds of the block bounded by Diego Portales, Bulnes, Manuel Rodríguez, and Aldunate. Summer hours are 8 a.m.–8 p.m. daily except Sundays and holidays, when it closes at 2 p.m.; the rest of the year, hours are 8 a.m.–7 p.m. except Sunday and holidays, when it again closes at 2 p.m.
