One of the perks of Codelco’s presence is the Chapa Verde ski area, part of the El Teniente [1] complex. Open to the general public in the winter, 3,100 meters above sea level, the 1,200-hectare area has four lifts and 22 separate runs, rated from beginner to expert. There is limited night skiing on an illuminated run.
Adult lift tickets at Chapa Verde (tel. 072/294255) cost US$23 weekdays, US$30 weekends; children pay half. There is also a ski school (US$9 for group lessons, US$35 for individual lessons), rental equipment (US$26 per day), a café, and a restaurant.
The Chapa Verde road is not a public highway; visitors must take Codelco buses (US$8 round-trip) from Rancagua [2]’s Lider Vecino home improvement store (Av. Manuel Ramírez 665). Departures are at 9 a.m. weekdays, or between 8 and 9:30 a.m. weekends.
