Ikarus Kiteboarding School (tel. 984/803-3490, www.kiteboardmexico.com [1]) is based in Playa del Carmen [2] but opened a kiteboarding camp at Isla Blanca, a huge saltwater lagoon north of Cancún [3]. Conditions for learning to kiteboard don’t get much better than this: steady wind, kilometers of flat water with few boats or other obstacles, and the water’s never more than waist deep.
Private classes are US$95 an hour, while groups are US$70 an hour per person (two hours minimum). Most first-timers need 3–6 hours of instruction to learn the basics. The school is regularly open from November to May, during the peak windy season; outside of those months, instruction is by appointment only. Simple lodging also is offered at Ikarus’s camp (US$5 pp tent, US$50 s/d).
