Museo Pelopidas (La Isla Shopping Village, Blvd. Kukulcán Km. 12.5, tel. 998/146-5151, www.museopelopidas.com [1], 10 a.m.–10 p.m. daily, free) is proof that cultural outlets in Cancún aren’t always what—or where—you expect.
Located on the 2nd floor of a Zona Hotelera mall, this small art gallery and museum has some genuinely good pieces, particularly modern works by local and international artists.
It’s not without gimmicks, like a roomful of “New Originals,” high-quality hand-painted imitations of masterworks by Klimt, Da Vinci, Picasso, and others. But even they are interesting for the slight but deliberate alterations required to distinguish such a work from a forgery.
Half-hour guided tours are offered in English and Spanish at 11 a.m. and 1, 4, and 6 p.m.
