On my first morning in Tikal National Park, in northern Guatemala, [2] where a 2,000-year-old Maya city sprawled beneath the vast Petén [3] wilderness, I blinked wide awake an hour before my pre-dawn alarm, anticipatory endorphins surged through hungry traveler’s veins. This was not just another day of traveling. This was Tikal. Before sunrise. It was a legendary place-time combo. I just prayed it was not overcast as it had been the previous day.
