Mon.–Sat. 8 a.m.–7 p.m., Sun. 9 a.m.–7 p.m., hours vary May and Sept.–Oct., closed Nov.–May, adult $6, child $3.75) explores the story behind the carving of Mount Rushmore [2], including the life of Mount Rushmore sculptor Gutzon Borglum.
The tour is self-guided using audio wands that point by point explain a series of exhibits full of artifacts and information about the 12 years spent carving the monument. The museum is large and there are a lot of exhibits, but be sure not to miss the film, located near the end of the tour, that is narrated by former South Dakota Senator Tom Daschle and includes historic film footage of workers carving Mount Rushmore.
