CLASSIEST ATMOSPHERE

Hacienda de los Morales

Next to the Periférico, the superlative restaurant Hacienda de los Morales (Vázquez de Mella 525, tel. 5281-4703 or 5281-4554, 1 p.m.–midnight daily, entrées $15–30) dates from the 16th century and was originally a silk-producing hacienda (hence the name—from moral, the mulberry tree groves in which the worms lived) in what was then a rural area west of Mexico City. The city has long since surrounded the hacienda, but this oasis of colonial calm is renowned for its Mexican cuisine, good service, and beautiful gardens. Well-prepared Mexican specialties include chiles en nogada (meat-stuffed chiles poblanos in a cream and nut sauce), shrimp in tequila sauce, and cabrito norteño (Northern Mexican–style barbecued goat). The clientele tends to dress up to dine here, so don’t come in shorts and a T-shirt.
