Mercado Sonora

Across Avenida Fray Servando Teresa de Mier from La Merced is Mercado Sonora, the so-called “witches’ market” of tourist brochures. Mexicans flock here to buy herbal remedies, love potions, talismans, and other assorted psycho-spiritual balms. The market also does a booming trade in endangered plants and animals, for which it is routinely raided by the police.
