La Polar
For very possibly the best birria (lamb stew) in Mexico City, stop off at La Polar (Guillermo Prieto 129, at the corner of the Circuito Interior, tel. 5546-5066, 9 a.m.midnight daily and until 2 a.m. Fri., entrées $37) in the San Rafael neighborhood. This classic, old-style cantina has several rooms, usually filled with crowds of Mexicans enjoying their legendary bowls of birria, a stew of shredded lamb in a spicy broth, served with tortillas, onion, salsa, and avocado. Birria is famed as a great hangover cure, to which the bleary-eyed crowds on Saturday and Sunday around noon can attest. La Polar also has beer on tap, and entertainment is provided by roving norteña and mariachi bands. It also serves birria to go from a take-out window.
