La Habana
At the corner of Avenida Cuauhtémoc and Morelos, at the eastern edge of the Reforma area, is the legendary coffeehouse and restaurant La Habana (Morelos 62, tel. 5535-2620, 8 a.m.midnight Mon.Sat., entrées $37), frequented by generations of journalists who work in the surrounding blocks. This is a wonderful spot to enjoy a strong cup of coffee and a good breakfast or lunch at leisure. They offer good set menus for both meals. I’m a huge fan of the huevos con machaca (eggs with dried, shredded beef in a spicy sauce), but there are plenty of other options. The Formica and plastic decor comes straight from the 1950s, along with the old photos of Cuba on the walls. When government bribery of journalists was more common than it is nowadays, the men’s room of La Habana was reputedly where most of the chayotes (a slang word for payoffs made for flattering stories) were passed along. Yet another historical legend has it that a young Fidel Castro planned his return to Cuba on the legendary ship Granma sitting at the tables here. Ground or whole-bean Veracruz coffee can be purchased to go.
