This itinerary takes you throughout the municipio (township) of Guadalajara. It covers the top attractions downtown and in the surrounding suburban areas of Minerva-Chapultepec, Zapopan, Tlaquepaque, and Tonalá. Plazas, monuments, museums, shoppingtheres a little bit of something for everyone. No car is needed for this itinerary; you can see all the highlights on foot or by taxi.
Spend your first two days downtown hitting the highlights of the city. On your first day, stroll around the Plaza Liberacíon and Plaza Tapatía and visit the cathedral and monuments. On your second day, visit the south side of downtown, beginning at the Plaza San Francisco and the Plaza Nueve Esquinas. Then spend the afternoon visiting the Museo de Arqueología, Museo de Paleontología, and maybe the Agua Azul park.
Taxi west to the Minerva-Chapultepec district to view the Orozco murals and the adjacent Museo de Arte at the University of Guadalajara and the neo-Gothic Templo Expiatorio. Continue west by taxi for the airy view atop the Los Arcos monument. Stop for a short visit at the Casa Museo José Clemente Orozco. Spend the afternoon in Zapopan, visiting the basilica of the Virgin of Zapopan and the adjacent Museo Huichol Wirrarica.
Transfer by car or taxi to your Tlaquepaque hotel. Stroll out on Avenida Independencia pedestrian mall and peruse the many inviting handicrafts stores. Continue your shopping meander past the Tlaquepaque plaza, the adjacent colonial-era Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, the parish church Parroquia San Pedro (don't miss the miniature Bible-story pageant), and the El Parián restaurant and entertainment center. Finish your walk, visiting the shops on Avenida Juárez. Enjoy supper along with the mariachis and the folk-dance performance at El Parián.
Taxi east to Tonalá to visit more shops and enjoy lunch. Be sure not to miss the statue of Cihualpilli in the town plaza, the Bazar de Sermel papier-mâché shop, and the factory shops. Return to Tlaquepaque for supper.
