STATUE OF CIHUALPILLI

STATUE OF CIHUALPILLI

Outside, cross Hidalgo east and enter the Plaza Principal. To the right of the Porfirian-era 1890 bandstand stands a dramatically Olympian bronze statue of Tonalá’s legendary queen, hurling a spear as if it were a javelin. (Although the statue depicts a Tarzanesque woman of about age 20, Cihualpilli was a widow of about 40 at the time of her people’s battle with conquistador Nuño de Guzmán in 1530.)
