La Basílica An alternative for a good view of the city is to head north up Venezuela eight blocks from the Plaza Grande. Even though construction began in 1992, the basilica (9 a.m.5 p.m. daily, $2 pp) is still not finished. Tours start with the stained glass and powerful gilt statues in the nave and move on to the 115-meter Condor Tower, with views easily comparable to those from El Panecillo. Notice the “gargoyles” are actually a menagerie of local animals, including armadillos. You can buy a pass to the upper floors and have a coffee with a view at the café. If you’re feeling bold, climb the bell tower. (Although it’s not part of the tour, you may be able to step up to the altar to see the Virgin of Quito atop El Panecillo framed in a heart-shaped glass window.) |
