CENTRAL PACIFIC This region comprises a narrow coastal plain hemmed hard up to the ocean by steep forest-clad mountains. The shore is fringed by long, lonesome gray-sand beaches washed by killer waves world-famous in surfing lore. Jacó, the most developed resort in the country, retains its popularity with the party-hearty crowd despite its ho-hum beach. Surfing beaches extend all the way south to Dominical and, beyond, the Brunca Coast, a once-inaccessible region in the throes of tourist development. To the north, Tárcoles is the nations foremost site for viewing crocodiles (best done on boat safaris), while nearby Carara National Park offers world-class wildlife viewing. South of Carara, the climate becomes increasingly humid, noticeable in the lush tropical forests of Manuel Antonio National Park, a superlative spot combining splendid beaches, almost-guaranteed close-up encounters with monkeys, and good snorkeling amid one of the nations few coral reefs. Nearby Quepos is a center for sportfishing. Inland, arduous hikes into the steep coastal mountains lead to waterfalls that feed such rivers as the Naranjo and Savegre, good for rafting. You can pack it all into a five-day visit. Tárcoles: Youre sure to see crocs close up on this river, with fabulous birding to boot.
