RANCHO SAN MIGUEL

Rancho San Miguel

This stable and stud farm (tel. 506/220-4060), about three km north of La Guácima, raises Andalusian horses and has a tiny museum with capas, saddles, and other miscellany relating to horsemanship. The highlight is the nocturnal one-hour dressage and horsemanship show in an enclosed arena to the accompaniment of classical Spanish music. It’s a fabulous experience. Although the show is spotlit, it’s quite dark, so you’ll need fast film or a digital camera to capture the action. The show is offered Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 8 p.m. (and by arrangement for groups). At last visit, the dinner and cocktails weren’t up to par, but the hosts were intent on upgrading. The show costs $25, or $37 with dinner, and $42 pp including hotel transfers, cocktail, performance, and dinner.

The stable offers horse-riding lessons for adults and children. There’s a botanical garden.
