Fidel Tristan Jade Museum

Fidel Tristan Jade Museum

This world-famous Museo de Jade (Calle 9 and Avenida 7, tel. 506/223-5800, 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m. Mon.–Fri., $2), on the 11th floor of the INS (Instituto Nacional de Seguro), displays the largest collection of jade in the Americas, including a panoply of pre-Columbian artifacts (mostly carved adzes and pendants) and reproductions. They’re well organized, with some mounted pieces backlit to show off the beautiful translucent colors of the jade. The museum also displays a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics and gold miniatures organized by culture and region, as well as special exhibits of jewelry by important national and foreign artists. Humankind’s eternal preoccupation with sex is evidenced by the many enormous clay phalluses and figurines of men and women masturbating and copulating. Bring your camera—the museum’s 11th-floor vantage point offers splendid panoramic views over the city.
