WATERTON HERITAGE CENTRE

Waterton Heritage Centre

The only official “sight” is the Waterton Heritage Centre (117 Waterton Ave., 403/859-2624; May–Sept. 10 a.m.–5 p.m., July and Aug. until 8 p.m.). This small museum contains exhibits telling the story of the park’s natural and human history, including a section of aspen in which a trapper carved his initials over 100 years ago. It also holds a selection of paintings and woodcarvings created by local artists. The heritage center is operated by the Waterton Natural History Association, which runs a variety of educational programs. From the heritage center, wander south along the lakeshore to a large picnic area and the trailhead for the Waterton Lakeshore Trail or north to the International Peace Park Pavilion and stunning views across Emerald Bay to the Prince of Wales Hotel.
