CURITIBA AND PARANÁ

People coming to Paraná almost always make a stopover in Curitiba. Most people are heading right out of town, but there are a few interesting sights in the city that could deter you for a day. The fact that you can see so many of Curitiba’s attractions in such a short time via the city’s organized bus tour is a big time-saver. Still, your next stop after arriving in Curitiba is where the excitement lies. For most travelers, that’s the magnificent Foz de Iguaçu, the largest (not tallest) waterfall in the world. The falls occur in a couple of stages and come from two sides at the same time. The area is extensive and the rush of water a thrill beyond measure. You can see the falls from several observation decks or even come up close to the bottom of the falls on a boat from the Argentinean side. If money is no object, then take a short helicopter ride over the park, the only way to see the entire scene at once. However you decide to experience the falls, you will certainly not forget it. It’s no wonder that the sights of Curitiba are somewhat lackluster after that. For sure, it’s best to spend a day in Curitiba before you head out to Foz.

Heading out of Curitiba toward the coast presents another spectacular scene via the Serra Verde Express train ride. The train crosses an incredible stretch of mountains and passes through tropical forests and high cliffs. The panoramic views from the train are exhilarating. If you head all the way to Paranaguá, you’ll have a chance to plan excursions to Ilha do Mel and Guaraqueçaba. On Ilha do Mel, you can hike along the many beaches, stopping to swim or drink in the view. At night, the two villages on the island offer up a selection of bars and restaurants in a charming, island atmosphere. Back in Guaraqueçaba, you’ll get the chance to hike through some of the most beautiful tropical forest in the south of Brazil in the Superagüi National Park and the Salto Morato Nature Preserve.
