SOLIDÃO

As its name implies (solidão meaning solitude or loneliness) this is a place that receives relatively few visitors. Considered one of the prettiest beaches on the island, Solidão requires a short hike down steep paths to arrive there. But the reward is well worth the trouble as the water here is bright blue and beautiful. On the far end is a waterfall with a natural pool in which you can swim—opting for fresh water instead of salt water. All around you is the lush vegetation of the island. There is no civilization here, so bring all your own supplies. If you’re up for a long hike, there’s a trail that leads all the way from Solidão to Naufragados (The Shipwrecked) on the southern tip of the island. Naufragados is a lovely point, even more deserted than Solidão, and five times more difficult to access.

You can camp out at Lagoinha do Leste around the lake area. There are signs indicating where you can pitch your tent. They ask you not to make a fire using the dry brush in the area but to bring your own materials. You can drink the water that comes in from the streams and small waterfalls.
