EXPLORE BRAZIL: Rio de Janeiro

JARDIM BOTANICO

Jardim Botanico

Many cities in Brazil have botanical gardens, but none so special as the one here in Rio (Rua Jardim Botânico 920, tel. 21/2294-9349, www.jbrj.gov.br, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. daily). Covering 137 hectares on a hill behind Leblon, the garden was built by King João VI when the royal family came to live in Brazil in 1808. It features more than 8,200 species of flora, both Brazilian and international. There is a Japanese garden, an Amazon environment, an orchid garden, a rose garden, towering imperial palm trees, and greenhouses. One of the most intriguing greenhouses is full of carnivorous plants. There are water cascades and plenty of footpaths with excellent signage. The atmosphere is very tranquil and there are many peaceful areas to sit and observe nature. Other features include the Botanical Museum (11 a.m.–5 p.m. Wed.–Sun.), with documents and materials on display, and the Museu dos Pilões (8 a.m.–5 p.m. Wed.–Sun.), which was once a gunpowder factory and now has artifacts from archeological digs in the area. There are snack stands and souvenir shops.

Note that weekends in the summer can get crowded, so if you’re looking for peace and quiet, you’d best go during the week. Access is via Leblon, next to the Jockey Club. On the road beside the garden (Avenida Pacheco Leão), there is a beautiful corridor of palm trees and you can walk around the neighborhood of Jardim Botânico to see the various art galleries and ateliers. The village is full of antique buildings and houses and is well worth a visit.
