If you have the money (or a credit card), Jackson is a great place to buy everything from artwork to mountain bikes. Even if you just hitchhiked in and have no cash to spare, it’s always fun to wander through the shops and galleries surrounding Town Square.

Fans of classic Old West furniture should not miss Fighting Bear Antiques (375 S. Cache, 307/733-2669 or 866/690-2669, www.fightingbear.com), famed for its collection of Thomas Molesworth pieces. It’s housed in a huge log structure a few blocks from Town Square. Owner Terry Winchell literally wrote the book on this creator of uniquely American furniture.

There are lots of T-shirt places in town, but Lee’s Tees (80 W. Broadway Ave/, 307/733-6671, www.leestees.com) sells the high-quality versions.

Outdoor Gear

Outdoor enthusiasts will discover several excellent shops in Jackson. Climbers, backpackers, and cross-country skiers head to America’s oldest climbing shop, Teton Mountaineering (170 N. Cache Dr., 307/733-3595 or 800/850-3595, www.tetonmtn.com), for quality equipment, maps, and travel guides. They also rent tents, sleeping bags, pads, backpacks, climbing shoes, crampons, and ice axes in the summer, along with snowshoes and cross-country, telemark, and alpine touring skis in winter. Check the bulletin board for used items.

Jack Dennis Sports (50 E. Broadway Ave., 307/733-3270 or 800/570-3270, www.jackdennisoutdoors.com) is a large upscale store with fly-fishing and camping gear in summer and skis and warm clothes during winter. The store also rents almost anything: tents, stoves, lanterns, cookware, sleeping bags, fishing poles, fly rods, waders, float tubes, backpacks, skis, snowboards, snowshoes, and more.

Skinny Skis (65 W. Deloney Ave., 307/733-6094 or 888/733-7205, www.skinnyskis.com) has high-quality clothing and supplies, especially cross-country ski gear. Rent sleeping bags, tents, climbing shoes, ice axes, baby carriers, and backpacks here. The same folks run the summer-only Moosely Seconds (307/739-1801) in Moose, with climbing and outdoor gear, along with rentals of trekking poles, ice axes, crampons, rock shoes, approach shoes, plastic boots, and snowshoes.

Another place to rent outdoor gear of all types—including fishing gear, tents, sleeping bags, kayaks, float tubes, dry suits, water skis, backpacks, camp stoves, and lanterns—is Leisure Sports (1075 S. U.S. Hwy. 89, 307/733-3040, www.leisuresportsadventure.com).

Teton Adventure Gear (220 E. Broadway Ave., 307/203-2915, www.tetonadventuregear.com) rents spotting scopes, binoculars, GPS units, bear spray, electric bear fences, tents, bike racks, avalanche air bags(!), and unique rooftop car tents.

Gart Sports (485 W. Broadway Ave., 307/733-4449, www.gartsports.com) is a large store with a variety of outdoor and sports gear.

The least expensive place to buy rugged outdoor wear, cowboy boots, and cowboy hats is Boot Barn (840 W. Broadway Ave., 307/733-0247, www.bootbarn.com).

Bargains

Buy used clothing and other items at Browse ‘N Buy Thrift Shop (139 N. Cache Dr., 307/733-7524) or the more chaotic Orville’s (385 N. Cache Dr., 307/733-2684).

Books

Unlike many Wyoming towns where the book selection consists of a few bodice-buster romance novels in the local pharmacy, Jackson is blessed with several fine bookstores. Valley Bookstore (125 N. Cache Dr., 307/733-4533, www.valleybookstore.com) is the largest local bookshop, with a big choice of regional titles, plus occasional author signings and readings. Main Event (980 W. Broadway Ave., 307/733-7112) in the Powderhorn Mall sells new books and CDs and rents videos.

A few doors away in the mall is Jackson Hole Book Traders (307/734-6001, www.jacksonholebooktraders.com), with a surprising selection of used and rare books.
