One of the largest national forests in the Lower 48, Bridger-Teton (“the B-T”) National Forest stretches southward for 135 miles from the Yellowstone border and covers 3.4 million acres.

In Jackson Hole, the two areas of most interest for recreation are the Teton Wilderness and the Gros Ventre Wilderness, but nonwilderness areas offer additional opportunities for recreation.

The Bridger-Teton National Forest supervisor’s office (307/739-5500, www.fs.fed.us/r4/btnf) is at 340 North Cache Drive in Jackson.

The Jackson Hole & Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center (532 N. Cache Dr., 307/733-3316, www.jacksonholechamber.com, open daily), a couple of blocks north on Cache, has a Forest Service worker on duty who can provide recreation information. The center usually sells Bridger-Teton maps and has a good choice of outdoor books.

Local ranger stations are the Jackson Ranger District (directly behind the supervisor’s office, 307/739-5400) and the Buffalo Ranger District (nine miles east of Moran Junction, 307/543-2386).
