Colter Bay
Trip Ideas
Colter Bay Village is one of the most developed parts of Grand Teton National Park, with a full marina, stores, a gas station, cabins, a campground, restaurants, and acres of parking.
The Colter Bay Visitor Center (307/739-3594, daily 8 a.m.-7 p.m. early June-early Sept., 8 a.m.-5 p.m. early May-early June and early Sept.-mid-Oct.) has a big information desk, park films, and a fine bookstore.
For many years, the primary attraction here was David T. Vern’s incredible collection of Indian arts—the finest of its kind in any national park. Unfortunately, the building did not adequately protect the collection and in 2011 it moved to Tucson for preservation. A brand-new facility is in the planning stages, but don’t expect to see it for several years—at best.
In the meantime, a handful of pieces remain on display, and Native artisans are present downstairs throughout the summer. Stop to chat with them about their paintings, beaded items, wood carvings, pottery, and weaving.
Step out behind the visitor center to join the shoreside fun at Colter Bay Marina, where you can take tours of Jackson Lake or rent a canoe or boat.
