The progressive Central United Methodist Church (639 N. 25th St., 414/344-1600, tours by appointment 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m. Mon. and Wed., till 1 p.m. Fri., free) is partially enclosed by earth and incorporates radical energy- saving and solar-energy measures (the tower holds solar panels).

It’s not a church per se, but the Tripoli Shrine Temple (3000 W. Wisconsin Ave., 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Mon.-Fri., free) is worth a look, if only for the oddly appealing Taj Mahal nature of the place. It was built during a period of “fantasy architecture” and was indeed based on the Taj Mahal of India. The main dome is 30 feet in diameter and is flanked by two smaller domes. Camels, lanterns, and floral designs are some of the artwork decorating the interiors.
