The brochures of many fishing-charter operators fill the Northern Frontier Regional Visitors Centre, but Greg Robertson at Bluefish Services (867/873-4818, www.bluefishservices.ca) offers the widest range of fishing opportunities, including fishing for arctic grayling from local river banks, chasing northern pike out on North Arm, and trawling the deepest parts of Great Slave Lake for massive lake trout. A four-hour trip, which includes fishing, sightseeing, and a fish fry, is $110 per person. For serious anglers, full-day fishing costs $235.

Enodah Wilderness Travel (867/873-4334, www.enodah.com) has a lodge on Trout Rock, a small island 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Yellowknife that was once the site of a Dogrib community. A day trip including guided fishing and access by floatplane is $520 per person, and three-day fishing trips are $1,685 per person.

Overlander Sports (4909 50th St., 867/873-2474, closed Sun.) rents canoes and kayaks for $45 per day, which allows enough time to explore nearby Jolliffe Island and its surrounding waters. For those interested in longer trips, weekly rates are $200.
