Beside Northern, Hay River Bakery (867/874-2322, Mon.–Fri. 8 a.m.–6 p.m.) has a wide variety of cakes and pastries and is a good place for an inexpensive lunch.
Keys Dining Room (Ptarmigan Inn, 867/874-6781, Mon.–Sat. 7 a.m.–9 p.m., Sun. 8 a.m.–9 p.m., $16–29) is your typical hotel restaurant, with something for everyone (think stir-fries, pastas, beef), as well as locally caught whitefish.
Worth the effort to find is Back Eddy Restaurant (6 Courtoreille St., 867/874-6680, Mon.–Fri. 11 a.m.–2 p.m. and 5–9 p.m., Sat. 11 a.m.–10 p.m., $15–27), above Rings Drug Store on Capital Crescent. Meals are served in the lounge or, for families, in a separate dining area. The menu features pickerel and whitefish fresh from the lake.
