The only scheduled rail service in western Canada is along the transcontinental line from Vancouver to Jasper and Edmonton. The other option is the privately operated Rocky Mountaineer.

Rocky Mountaineer

Rocky Mountaineer Vacations (604/606-2245 or 800/665-7245, www.rockymountaineer.com) operates a summer-only luxurious rail trip through the interior of British Columbia between Vancouver and Banff or Jasper. A third route links Whistler and Vancouver via the Cariboo region of central British Columbia. Travel is during daylight hours only so you don’t miss anything.

Trains depart in either direction in the morning (every second or third day), overnighting at Kamloops or Quesnel. One-way travel in RedLeaf Service, which includes light meals, nonalcoholic drinks, and Kamloops accommodations, costs $859 per person d from Vancouver to either Banff or Jasper and $959 from Vancouver to Calgary. GoldLeaf Service is the ultimate in luxury. Passengers ride in a two-story glass-domed car, eat in a separate dining area, and stay in Kamloops’s most luxurious accommodations. GoldLeaf costs $1,739 per person from Vancouver to Banff or Jasper and $1889 to Calgary

The same company also operates the Whistler Mountaineer (604/606-2245 or 800/665-7245, www.whistlermountaineer.com, May–mid-Oct.) between Vancouver and Whistler. The fare for a round-trip is adult $199 or $249, depending on the class of travel.
