Legislative Building

The imposing Legislative Building is hard to miss. Built to resemble the U.S. Capitol, its 287-foot dome was completed in 1928. The building remains the fifth-largest masonry domed building in the world. The central rotunda is the central attraction, with a 25-foot-long Tiffany chandelier suspended overhead (this was the last major piece created by Comfort Tiffany), enormous bronze doors, busts of George Washington and Martin Luther King Jr., Belgian marble steps, and gargoyle-capped draperies.

Enter the Senate and House of Representatives gallery chambers from the fourth floor. Come here between early January and early March on even-numbered years, or early January to mid-April on odd-numbered years, to see the legislature in session. The capitol is open daily, with free 45-minute tours (360/586-3460, www.ga.wa.gov/visitor, tours hourly 10 a.m.–p.m.).
