Cyclists love the quiet roads of Vashon Island. You can carry bikes aboard all state ferries (including the passenger one to Vashon from Seattle) for an extra $0.90 round-trip. Metro buses all have front bike racks that you can use if your legs poop out while riding around the island, or for getting to the Fauntleroy terminal from Seattle.

Rent bikes from Vashon Island Bicycles (9925 SW 178th St. 206/463-6225, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues., 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Wed.–Sat., noon–4 p.m. Sun., closed Mon.). Eastlyshire Hayrides (16309 Crescent Dr. SW, 206/567-4146) offers hay wagons pulled by its distinctive Shire horses.

Once you've explored the island by land, dip a paddle in the sound and get a look at the views from the water. Vashon Island Kayak (206/463-9257) rents sea kayaks and leads tours from Burton Acres Park.
