Pick up a map of hiking trails on Bainbridge from the chamber of commerce office. The largest parcel of public land—280 acres—contains second-growth forests managed by the Department of Natural Resources. Called Grand Forest, it’s near the center of the island off Mandus Oldon Road and has two miles of paths.
Manzanita Park is a 120-acre parcel with a two-mile hiking and equestrian trail through woods and wetlands. The park is on Day Road on the northwest side of the island.
Back of Beyond (181 Winslow Way, 206/842-9229, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. daily Apr.–Oct., open Tues.–Sun. Oct.–Mar., closed Mon., boathouse open until dusk) has sea kayak, canoe, sailboat, and rowboat rentals and tours from the Winslow waterfront.
For adventure under the water, try Exotic Aquatics (100 Madison Ave. N, 206/842-1980, exoticaquaticsscuba.com), which offers guided scuba dives in nearby waters.
Take advantage of the island’s many back roads, as well as those on Kitsap Peninsula, on the saddle of a rented bike from Classic Cycle (310 Winslow Way E, 206/842-9191). If you've got your own ride but you need some supplies or a quick repair, B. I. Cycle Rentals (195 Winslow Way, 206/842-6413) is the best performance bike shop in the area.
