Th 15,800-acre Tatoosh Wilderness abuts the southeast flank of Mount Rainier National Park and is one of the few remaining parcels of unlogged Forest Service land for miles. The nine-mile Tatoosh Trail (No. 161) is a strenuous forest and alpine hike but has outstanding views, especially if you take the side route to the 6,310-foot mountain that was formerly topped by Tatoosh Lookout.

Another enjoyable side trail leads a half mile to Tatoosh Lakes. Get to the trailhead by turning off Highway 12 at the Packwood Ranger Station and following Forest Road 52 to Road 5270, which takes you to the trailhead, 11 miles from the Ranger Station.
