Mineral Lake
Rumor has it that oft-lucky trout anglers at Mineral Lake (three miles south of Elbe on Mineral Hill Rd.) regularly hook enormous 10-pound rainbows and brownies. This hidden glacial lake offers some impressive views of the mountain when it decides to peek out from under its pillow of clouds.
Rent boats, fishing poles, and crayfish traps at Mineral Lake Resort (148 Mineral Hill Rd., 360/492-5367, www.minerallakeresort.com). Zip around in a pontoon ($105 full day, $85 half day) or slowly paddle yourself around in a rowboat ($20 daily). Or just fish from the dock for $6; poles can be had for $5 daily. Non-anglers can also play in the water in a paddleboat ($7 per hour).
