The Whale Museum (62 1st St. N in Friday Harbor, 360/378-4710 or 800/946-7227, www.whalemuseum.org, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. daily, $6 adults, $5 seniors, $3 ages 5–18 and students, free for kids under 5) has whale and porpoise displays including the genealogy of Puget Sound orcas and full skeletons of a baby gray whale, plus adult killer and minke whales.

Watch a fine video on orcas, examine whale fetuses, and learn about snoring whales, echolocation, and how they mate. You can also "adopt" one of the 80 or so local orcas. There’s also a gift shop in the museum with games, T-shirts, and jewelry.

If you spot a whale anywhere around the San Juans, swimming or stranded, call the museum’s 24-hour Whale Hotline at 800/562-8832. The museum posts hotline reports on its website.
