Front Street Café (101 Spring St., 360/378-2245, 7 a.m.–4 p.m. daily) is a good breakfast hangout place, with a fun atmosphere, espresso and pastries, and a ferry-side location. The dependable lunches include homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, and more. Angie’s Cannery House Restaurant (174 N. 1st St., 360/378-2500) is another good destination for lunchtime sandwiches and soups.

An old standby, Blue Dolphin Café (185 1st St., 360/378-6116, 5 a.m.–2 p.m. daily) is just a block and a half from the ferry. The big breakfast menu is the main draw, with all the usuals, including eggs Benedict, omelettes, and hash browns for reasonable prices.

Another simple place near the ferry terminal is Hungry Clam (130 1st St., 360/378-3474, 11 a.m.–7 p.m. daily), where you will find cheap and very good fish and chips served in a basket, plus clam chowder, burgers, and grilled chicken sandwiches.

No place in Friday Harbor serves healthier, heartier lunches than The Market Chef (225 A St., 360/378-4546, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Fri. in summer, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Mon.–Fri. in winter), a deli and bistro that offer up scrumptious sandwiches on house-made breads, inventive salads, and soothing soups, all made with organic and local ingredients.

San Juan Coffee Roasting Company (18 Cannery Landing, 360/378-4443 or 800/624-4119, www.rockisland.com/~sjcoffee, 9 a.m.–6:30 p.m. daily Apr.–Labor Day, 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. Labor Day–Nov., 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Nov.–Mar.) specializes in full and dark roasted coffees, sold by the cup or pound.

If you're in search of a great all-American burger, fries, and shake, head to Vic’s Drive-In (25 2nd St., 360/378-2120, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 7 a.m.–2 p.m. Sat., closed Sun.)

Lime Kiln Café (360/378-2155 or 800/451-8910, www.rocheharbor.com, 7 a.m.–9 p.m. daily in summer, 7 a.m.–2 p.m. in winter) offers quick meals out of Roche Harbor Resort. Though the fish-and-chips and burger fare here is forgettable and overpriced, it is the cheapest at the resort.
