A spacious contemporary home with seven guest rooms and private baths, Hillside House B&B (365 Carter Ave., Friday Harbor, 360/378-4730 or 800/232-4730, www.hillsidehouse.com, $125–275 d) is notable for its full-flight aviary and fine harbor views. The home sits on an acre of wooded land just a half mile from town.

A mile west of Friday Harbor, Trumpeter Inn B&B (318 Trumpeter Way, Friday Harbor, 360/378-3884 or 800/826-7926, www.trumpeterinn.com, $155–195 s or d) is set on five acres of pastoral land, complete with a tranquil pond. The showcase of the property is the lovingly tended garden featuring several varieties of lavender and a well-placed hot tub from which to soak it all in. The five guest rooms in this contemporary home have private baths, and the rate includes a sumptuous breakfast.

For a real waterfront room, Wharfside B&B (360/378-5661 or 800/899-3030, www.slowseason.com, $179 d) has two small staterooms aboard the gracious 60-foot sailing vessel Jacquelyn, docked at the Friday Harbor Marina. If you have the opportunity, splurge a little for the two-night cruise package. For $468 you'll get two nights and a morning cruise to nearby Seal Rock.

Those looking to stay closer to Roche Harbor and British Camp can consider Wildwood Manor (5335 Roche Harbor Rd., 360/378-3447 or 877/298-1144, www.wildwoodmanor.com, $199–265 d), a B&B in a large Queen Anne–style home atop a knoll above Roche Harbor, with a view across the water to British Columbia. The lavish modern home is surrounded by 11 acres of forests, and each of the four rooms follows the Victorian theme.

The sleek, modern interior of Bird Rock Hotel (35 1st St., 800/352-2632, www.birdrockhotel.com) contrasts nicely with the historic exterior of one of downtown Friday Harbor’s oldest buildings. Dark woods and clean lines dominate the furnishings, which are highlighted with comfy pillow-top beds and big flat-screen TV monitors. A light breakfast can be brought directly to your room each morning or served in the downstairs salon, which is where you can also pick up the scrumptious cookies and lemonade served each afternoon. The smallest rooms with shared bathrooms go for $117–147 s or d, while standard rooms are $167–187 s or d. The superior suites are $217–287.

The charming Hotel De Haro (248 Reuben Memorial Dr., Roche Harbor, 360/378-2155) was built in 1886 and fronts a gracious formal garden and the harbor. The hotel’s downstairs lobby is worth a look even if you aren't staying here, with historic photos and a big fireplace. Rates at the hotel start at $129 s or d for an old-fashioned room (bath down the hall and no TV) that faces the harbor, up to the presidential suite ($159 s or d) with its own fireplace and private bath. This one really is a presidential suite—Theodore Roosevelt slept here.
