Rosario Resort & Spa (1400 Rosario Rd., 360/376-2222 or 800/562-8820, www.rosarioresort.com) is a famous and historic getaway five miles south of Eastsound, and the largest resort on the islands. It’s well worth a look even if you can't afford to stay here. The perfect island setting and delightful amenities make it a very popular outdoor wedding location. The resort is housed in an early 1900s mansion that once belonged to shipbuilder and Seattle mayor Robert Moran. Moran wasn't blessed with musical talent, so he played the 1,972-pipe organ like a player piano and none of his guests were the wiser; organ concerts are still held frequently. The historic building—on the National Register of Historic Places—has been beautifully restored, offering fine dining, an indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, fitness facility, and massage (extra fee). Rooms cost $199–319 d, and suites are $239–599 d. These vary greatly in size, amenities, and the age of the furnishings, but most are a disappointment, particularly given the beauty of the main building. You'll find nicer rooms for less elsewhere on the island.
