Anacortes is natural place to rest your head before or after a long haul on the ferries across the San Juans. It is also an excellent base camp for families and young travelers sticking to a budget—rooms are significantly less expensive than on San Juan, Orcas, or Lopez, and all the islands are within easy reach for a day trip.
Make reservations far ahead for the summer months; some places fill up by March for the peak season in July and August.
