The scenic and diverse grounds at Salt Creek County Park (three miles east of Joyce off Hwy. 112, 360/928-3441) is an open secret among Washingtonians. This is, hands down, the nicest municipal park on the peninsula.
Situated three miles east of the village of Joyce, this was the site of Fort Hayden during World War II, and the concrete gun emplacements are still explorable, though the 45-foot-long guns are long gone. The fort sits on a bluffside, with grassy lawns and picnic areas adjoining campsites.
A path down to the rocky beach offers lots of tidepools during low tide. Farther up the bluff are several miles worth of trails.
