With its gray-shingled roof in the shape of a stylized gull with its wings spread, the Grey Gull Motel (651 Ocean Shores Blvd. SW, 360/289-3381 or 800/562-9712, www.thegreygull.com, $130–195 d) appears (from the appropriate angle) in imminent danger of flying away. The hotel has modern, spacious efficiencies, one- and two-bedroom suites, as well as penthouses ($350 d). There is a two-night minimum on summer weekends. Amenities include a sauna and outdoor pool.

Don’t let the brand fool you: The Comfort Inn (829 Ocean Shores Blvd., 360/289-9000 or 866/289-9003, $159–279 d) in Ocean Shores is nicer than you’d think—this is a large, upscale place on the beach, with spacious, modern rooms and attentive service. The property includes a pool, fitness center, business center, and continental breakfast.

Situated north of Ocean Shores on land purchased by the Quinalt tribe, Quinalt Beach Resort and Casino (78 Hwy. 115, 360/289-9466 or 888/461-2214, www.quinaultbchresort.com, $179 d, $349–549 suites) offers the area’s most spacious and comfortable rooms, most with ocean-facing views. Service is very good, and the hotel has a full-service spa with sauna and massage service, walkways out over the dunes to the beach, a nice restaurant, and a café. Plus, of course, there’s a full casino.

Polynesian Condominium Resort (615 Ocean Shores Blvd. NW, 360/289-3361 or 800/562-4836, www.thepolynesian.com, $129–229 d) caters to families with its indoor pool, game room, sauna, and hot tub. Choose among hotel rooms, kitchenette efficiencies, or full suites with kitchens and fireplaces. There’s a two-night minimum in the summer.
