Just across the street from the beach in town, Anthony’s Cabins (1310 Pacific Hwy. N, Long Beach, 360/642-2802 or 888/787-2754, www.anthonyshomecourt.com, $79–125 s or d) offers studio and one-bedroom units with kitchens in a 1930s-era house.

About a mile north of downtown, The Breakers (Hwy. 103 and 26th St., 360/642-4414 or 800/219-9833, www.breakerslongbeach.com, $119–139 s or d) offers pretty standard motel rooms, plus spacious one or two-bedroom suites with kitchens ($179–278) for up to four. Amenities include an indoor pool, sauna, and hot tub.

For a bit more privacy, try Boardwalk Cottages (800 S. Boulevard St., Long Beach, 360/642-2305 or 800/569-3804, www.boardwalkcottages.com, $89–139) with its one- and two-bedroom cottages, many with kitchenettes and decks.

Anchorage Cottages (2209 N. Boulevard St., Long Beach, 360/642-2351 or 800/642-2351, www.theanchoragecottages.com, $80–128) provides beachside units with either one or two bedrooms, most with fireplaces, as well as more spacious two-bedroom cottages with fireplaces. All units have fully equipped kitchens.

There are also several B&Bs right in town. Set within a contemporary home, A Rendezvous Place Bed and Breakfast (1610 California Ave. S, Long Beach, 360/642-8877 or 866/642-8877, www.rendezvousplace.com, $129–169 d, suite $219) is one of the rare bed-and-breakfasts that doesn’t have so many antiques that you feel like you’re in a mausoleum or fear you’re going to break something expensive. Rooms are comfy and nicely decorated, and outside there is a hot tub and deck overlooking the private backyard.

Another option is Boreas B&B (607 N. Boulevard St., 360/642-8069 or 888/642-8069, www.boreasinn.com, $160–179 s or d), a quiet and cozy 1920s beachfront home with airy and light-colored interiors and an enclosed sundeck with a hot tub. The four guest rooms have shared or private baths. The proprietors also rent out a family- and pet-friendly cottage next door.
