Lodging can be hard to come by on summer weekends, especially during the big festivals. Many rooms are booked a year ahead for Memorial Day weekend, the International Kite Festival in August, and Labor Day weekend. It’s a good idea to reserve two to four weeks ahead for other summer weekends.

The Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau (360/642-2400 or 800/451-2542, www.funbeach.com) tries to keep track of which accommodations have space. It also has a listing of several dozen vacation houses and cabins available for longer periods of time.
