Buckhorn Wilderness
Covering 44,258 acres, the Buckhorn Wilderness occupies barren ridges and peaks topping 7,000 feet within Olympic National Forest and bordering on the extensive wilderness within Olympic National Park.
The Mt. Townsend Trail begins from Forest Road 2760 off Road 27, northwest of Quilcene. This six-mile route climbs to the top of 6,280-foot Mt. Townsend, providing incredible vistas in all directions.
Big Quilcene Trail starts at the three-sided shelter 10 miles up Forest Road 2750 from Quilcene and follows the Big Quilcene River into the high country before switchbacking to the summit of Marmot Pass at 6,000 feet. From here, you can continue into Olympic National Park via the Constance Pass Trail. The Big Quilcene is famous for the multitudes of rhododendrons that bloom here in early summer.
Contact the Hood Canal Ranger District (360/765-2200) for more information on the Buckhorn Wilderness.
