A handful of farms invite the public to stroll through their display gardens and order bulbs for fall delivery.

Owned by the Washington Bulb Co., RoozenGaarde (15867 Beaver March Rd., 360/424-8531 or 800/732-3266, www.tulips.com) offers retail and mail-order bulb sales, fresh-cut flowers, and a gift shop; it’s open daily March–May, and Mon.–Sat. the rest of the year. The Dutch-style windmill is a local landmark.

Skagit Valley Gardens (18923 Johnson Rd., just off I-5, 360/424-6760) has additional floral displays in both spring and fall.

LeFeber Bulb Company (15379 Highway 536, 360/424-6234 or 800/524-3181) also sells bulbs, gifts, and fresh-cut flowers from its big shop. A small Museum on Bulb History is on the premises, with agricultural displays during the Tulip Festival.

La Conner Flats Display Garden (15920 Best Rd., 360/466-3190) has an assortment of flowers (primarily roses) in bloom March–September. The Gardens at La Conner Flats restaurant serves delicious lunches and high tea (reservations required) 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Tues.–Saturday.

Next door, Christianson’s Nursery (15806 Best Rd., 360/466-3821) features the 600 varieties of roses, plus rhododendrons, azaleas, dogwoods, and other flowering plants.

The Skagit Display Gardens (16650 Hwy. 536, www.mtvernon.wsu.edu, cover 10 acres at a Washington State University research station north of Mt. Vernon. Included are native Washington plants, fruit trees (including antique apple varieties), roses, and more.
