Many road-weary travelers heading up to the Canadian border tend to let the scenery blur by along I-5 once they pass the outskirts of Bellingham, but there are a number of worthwhile stops along the way.

Just north of Bellingham, the little hamlet of Ferndale is home to one of the best collections of historic log buildings in the state and is a darned fine spot for a piece of pie and a cup of coffee.

Along the waterfront, Birch Bay’s moon-shaped waters have drawn families from both sides of the border for generations to enjoy its warm waters come summertime. Similarly, Lummi Island and Semiahmoo Spit also offer a shoreside respite and a chance to walk quiet beaches, ply the waters for fish, and soak in the sunsets.

For a more terrestrial treat, little Lynden’s shady streets and spinning windmills present travelers a taste of old world Holland. Set amid the idyllic dairy fields and ruby red barns along Highway 539, this small town also offers visitors a chance to peek in at one of the best history museums they’ve never heard of.

All roads eventually lead to Blaine, the largest Canadian border crossing in the northwest. Before hopping in line, be sure to pull off at Peace Arch Park to walk the greens and take a gander at the white arch standing proudly as a testament to the long-lasting friendship between two countries.
