Near Bellis Fair Mall there are numerous big chain hotels to choose between. I particularly enjoyed staying at the Best Western Heritage Inn (151 E. McLeod Rd., 360/647-1912 or 800/528-1234, $129 s or $139 d), a reasonably priced hotel complex with New England colonial-style buildings and interiors. The grounds are well tended, and there’s an outdoor pool, hot tub, fitness center, airport shuttle service, and complimentary breakfast. The rooms sport super comfy mattresses, new linens, and big flat-screen TVs. The only downside to some rooms can be the traffic drone—ask for a room facing away from the freeway.
Or get out of town and stay at Anderson Creek Lodge (5602 Mission Rd., 360/966-0598, www.andersoncreek.com, $120–160). Llamas graze in the pasture on this 55-acre property 10 miles northeast of Bellingham. Rooms in the lodge have king-size beds, private baths, and access to a hot tub.
