Located two miles northeast of Gold Bar, the 678-acre Wallace Falls State Park (360/793-0420, www.parks.wa.gov, daily in the summer, Wed.–Sun. Oct.–mid-Apr.) is famous for its towering 265-foot cataract (visible from Highway 2). A half dozen gorgeously situated walk-in tent sites are available ($12; no showers), but the main attraction is the falls.
Two routes lead to Wallace Falls, an easy path along an old railroad grade that’s open to mountain bikes, and a steeper route (Woody Trail) that follows closer to the river. The two trails join for the last 1.5 miles, with several viewpoints along the way, including one atop the falls.
The hike to the falls is six miles round-trip via Woody Trail and eight miles round-trip via the old railroad grade. Along the way, you gain almost 1,400 feet in elevation.
