Hiking
To visit a working fire tower with mountain vistas in all directions, take the Alder Creek Road southwest from Twisp to Lookout Mountain. At the end of the road a trail leads 1.3 miles to Lookout Mountain Lookout.
Twisp River Road, west of town, provides access to the north side of the 145,667-acre Lake Chelan-Sawtooth Wilderness, with a dozen different paths taking off from the valley. A fine loop trip of approximately 15 miles begins just southwest of War Creek Campground on Forest Road 4420. The Eagle Creek Trail starts at an elevation of 3,000 feet and climbs steadily through Douglas fir forests and meadows, reaching 7,280-foot Eagle Pass after seven miles.
Here it meets the Summit Trail, with connections to the Stehekin end of Lake Chelan or to other points in the wilderness. To continue the loop hike, follow it south a mile to Oval Creek Trail. This path leads back down to the trailhead, passing beautiful West Oval Lake on the way; a two-mile detour climbs to two additional cirque lakes.
